Thankfulness 5

Devotional Reading: As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. Colossians 2:6‭-‬7 KJV

Let’s take a look today at how a thankful heart produces much fruit in the life of the believer. We know of course that the Fruit of the Spirit ultimately comes from the Spirit of God Himself, but how much more easily is the Fruit of the Spirit cultivated and permitted to grow in a heart that is tender towards Him because it is overflowing with gratitude?

Colossians 2:6-7 says to be rooted and built up in Jesus, established in the faith, abounding in thanksgiving. It is so important to be abounding in thanksgiving because God wants hearts that are rooted in Him, prepared for the seed of His Word to be planted so the fruit of His Spirit can grow. Thankfulness is one of the major components in keeping the ground of our hearts cultivated. A thankful heart will produce the good fruit that the Lord desires to come forth from our lives.

Paul encourages the church of Colosse to live pleasing to the Lord and lists several ways in how to do so, two of them being to bear fruit in every good work and to give thanks to our Father (Colossians 1:10-12). Giving thanks and bearing good fruit go hand in hand as we live with the purpose of pleasing God.

Knowing this, spend time today thanking the Lord for all that He has done in your life and for who He is, reflect on all the benefits that come from a heart devoted to thankfulness.

Prayer and Confession
Father, thank you for the opportunity to offer a thank-offering.
