The Light of The World

Devotional Reading: Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12 ESV

Do you remember being scared of the dark as a child? Maybe you lay in bed, fearing what could be lurking in the darkness around you, or under your bed, or in your closet, so perhaps your parents put a nightlight in your room to offer a little bit of light. That little bit of light is usually just enough comfort to know you weren’t completely in the dark.

Complete darkness in a room can be scary. It can also be scary to walk in spiritual darkness. Yet often, we find ourselves there because the devil tricks us into thinking that all the fun things happen in the dark. He convinces us that if we lie about that one thing and just don’t tell anyone, no one will know. He tells us if we look at those images again, no one will know. He says go take part in those things you know you shouldn’t do, and no one will find out! The devil tricks us into thinking that the best the world has to offer is in the dark, but he is wrong. Spiritual darkness usually leads to spiritual death.

The best the world has to offer is only through someone who once walked in this world as the light. His name is Jesus. The things of this world that trick us into believing we’ll be fulfilled really only keep us in hiding. The devil says “keep doing those things” and “keep it a secret,” but Jesus calls us to bring it to the light. Jesus does not condemn us, but He offers us freedom and life instead of darkness. He is the light we need, and in Him we find life.

Prayer and Confession
Jesus, You are the light of the world. Help me to walk with You and bring my sins into the light. Help me to be a light in this dark world. Amen.
