Be Wise To Listen More

Key Text: “Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.” — James 1:19

One of the greatest signs of wisdom is not how much a person knows, but how well they listen. The book of Proverbs 17:27 talks about a fool who is quick to give an answer before fully hearing a matter. Many people listen only long enough to prepare their next sentence. Wisdom, however, listens to understand. It recognizes that every conversation contains information, perspective, and lessons that might otherwise be missed.

King Solomon became the wisest king in Israel not because he asked God for wealth or power, but because he desired an understanding heart. A listening heart learns faster than a talking mouth. In everyday life, many conflicts would disappear if people spent less time defending themselves and more time understanding others. Sometimes the answer you are looking for has already been spoken, but your mind was too busy rehearsing a reply to hear it.

Think about it: God gave us two ears and one mouth. That is probably not a coincidence. The wise person knows that words are like toothpaste. Once they come out, getting them back in is almost impossible. A few extra moments of listening can save hours of explanation, apology, and damage control. Wisdom often sounds less like a speech and more like careful attention.

Prayer and Confession
Father, give me a listening heart and a teachable spirit. Help me to hear before I speak, understand before I judge, and learn before I respond. Let my words be seasoned with wisdom and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
